One of the cutest moments in the Harry Potter movies was when Hagrid baked Harry Potter a cake for his 11th birthday. The cake was pink with “Happee Birthdae Harry” in green frosting. It is such a fun cake.
This is such an easy cake to make at home. You can use an instant cake mix with vanilla frosting with food color. Super simple. This is one of my daughter’s favorite Harry Potter recipes to make at home.
Harry Potter Birthday Cake Ingredients
The inside of the cake is chocolate with a little bit of a kick to it. You can create the cake at home or buy some ready to go ingredients. We have created this cake both way and love both. Personally, I like buying the cake box mix to make it easier. However, my daughter wanted to make this one from scratch so here you go.

Harry Potter Birthday Cake Directions
Let’s start with the cake. Since you are frosting this cake, you will want to take two days to create this masterpiece. You want the frosting to stay on the cake, so it is better to make the cake and refrigerate it overnight before frosting. Let’s jump into making the cake.
Cake Directions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Grease 2 round cake pans.
- In a bowl, mix cake flour, cocoa powder, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
- Mix in eggs (one at a time).
- Add olive oil, vanilla, and rum extracts.
- Pour in hot coffee (being careful of the coffee splashing)
- Add dry ingredients into the bowl.
- Add the white vinegar and stir.
- Pour into round pans and bake for 35-40 minutes.
- Once baked, pull out and cool on a rack for about an hour.
- Then wrap in plastic wrap and cool in the refrigerator overnight.
Once the cake has cooled overnight, let’s make the frosting and decorate it.
Frosting Directions
- Spread the chocolate frosting on one of the round cakes.
- Place the second round cake on top of the frosting.
- Mix powdered sugar, butter, vanilla extract with a mixer.
- Slowly add heavy whipping cream. Frosting should be a thick buttercream.
- Take a cup of frosting and add it to a separate bowl. Mix in pink food coloring to turn the frosting a light pink color.
- Frost the entire cake with the pink frosting.
- Let chill for an hour in the refrigerator.
- Write “Happee Birthdae Harry” on the top of the cake

Our 16 year old daughter loved this cake. She liked making it and decorating it. This recipe is definitely easy enough for kids to create. As I mentioned earlier, you can make it even easier by buying ready to go box cake mix and white frosting, along with the chocolate frosting. Anything to make your life a bit easier.
We hope you enjoy making this recipe for a Harry Potter movie marathon or birthday party.
