Does anyone fancy a Butterbeer?
Your Harry Potter visit will not be complete without the drink of choice amongst the young wizards. The first time that Butterbeer was introduced in the Potter series is when it was presented to Harry in the third movie, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. When J.K. Rowling was interviewed Bon Appétit magazine she said that she would imagine the beverage to “to taste a little bit like less-sickly butterscotch.”
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Theme Park serves Butterbeer either hot or cold in several locations throughout the theme park. This non-alcoholic beverage has a sweet cream soda, butterscotch taste and will still have a warning effect on all of its customers. The Butterbeer served in the theme park was tasted and approved by non-other then J.K. Rowling herself.
Chef Steven Jayson, Vice President and Corporate Executive Chef for Universal Parks & Resorts worked hard with his team for nearly three years to come up with the perfect taste for this very famous wizarding beverage. Steven had the honor of speaking with J.K. Rowling regarding her exact thoughts on what she imagined the drink would taste like.
Steven also did extensive homework reading the books to come up with any ideas on the taste of the beverage. Being that it was to be a family-friendly drink Steven immediately decided that no alcohol was to be added. Universal also asked that there be no butter or dairy products added in an order to accommodate their lactose intolerant guests. J.K. Rowling asked that the drink be made using real sugar.
Steven admitted that the situation was a bit daunting and stated “We wanted to take what Harry Potter fans had read in the books and seen in the movies and bring it to life. We knew that people’s expectations were going to be very high. What’s more, we had to create a beverage that was good for all ages.”
After about 15-16 failed attempts to create Butterbeer Steve was happy. J.K. Rowling was given several samples, when she tasted the sample she believed to be just right she said “Yes, Chef. That’s it.”
Butterbeer is served both frozen as well as regular. So the big question is which one will you choose?
